2019-2020  Naval Science II / III Syllabus

The Naval Science III course is divide
d into three broad curricular areas, Naval Knowledge, Leadership and Naval Skills comprised of: 

Naval Knowledge 

Unit 1: Sea Power and National Security 

The cadet will be expected to demonstrate the knowledge of the Importance of Sea Power, The U.S. Merchant Marine, Grand Strategy, U.S. Strategy and the Navy, National Security and Modern Conflict as it relates to America. 

Unit 2: Naval Operations and Support Functions 

The cadet will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the major organizations of the Navy, Naval Operations, Communications, Intelligence, Logistics and Naval Research and Development how it relates to the Navy. 

Unit 3:  Military Law 

The cadet will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of Military Justice, Discipline and Punishment how it relates to the Navy. 

Unit 4:  International Law and the Sea 

The cadet will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of International Law, International Law of the Sea and The law of war at Sea as it applies to countries using the sea. 

             Unit 5:  Naval Weapons 

The cadet will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of Naval Weapons IE: Ship/Aircraft Guns, Ship/Submarine/Aircraft Missiles and Laser and Rail Guns. 

Unit 6: Modern Naval Warfare 

The cadet will be excepted to demonstrate an understanding of Cyber, Special,  Mine, Chemical, Biological and Nuclear Warfare. 

             Unit 7:  Naval Shipboard Organization 

The cadet will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the Navy's mission and organization to ensure combat effectiveness. 

 

 Leadership 

The cadet will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the Challenge of Leadership, The qualities of an effective leader, How to evaluate the performance of subordinates, and How to give instruction. 

Naval Skills 

Unit 1:  Ship Construction and Damage Control 

The cadet will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of Ship Construction, Propulsion, Naming, Damage Control and Fire Fighting. 

Unit 2:  Deck Seamanship 

The cadets will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of Marlinspike Seamanship. Anchoring, Mooring, Underway Replenishment and Small boat Seamanship. 

Unit 3:  Navigation and Time 

Demonstrate a basic understanding of Navigation, Marine Navigation, Aids to Navigation and the significance instruments of Time used in this science. 

Unit 4:  Rules of the Road and Maneuvering Board 

The cadet will be expected to demonstrate the basic concepts of maneuvering a small boat under classroom conditions through the use of the maneuvering board.
